Dreams as I get older

  • Life

Childhood dreams are whimsical and filled with wonder. They can sometimes become a reality, but more often than not, they remain distant fantasies. Dreams serve as a means for our subconscious to process life’s experiences and comprehend the world we inhabit. They can ignite our imagination, offering inspiration and a temporary escape from the ordinary realities of our existence.

As a child, I never had any specific dreams or aspirations. In an Asian household, however, there was an underlying expectation for me to pursue a career in medicine or a scientific field. It felt almost inevitable. Naturally, I put effort into excelling in those subjects.

However, my interests took an unexpected turn during my final year of high school. I spent countless hours that summer in front of the computer, exploring programming, and Photoshop, and even indulging in playing Sims 2. It was a significant shift from what was expected of me.

Being the type of person who follows my own desires, I pursued a degree specializing in digital subjects like advertising and e-commerce. It allowed me to enter the field I was passionate about, and I was content with my choice. However, lately, I’ve been feeling a sense of fatigue creeping in. The enthusiasm that once fueled me seems to be waning.

During the year of solitude brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, I found myself daydreaming about coffeehouses and cafes. I wondered how they were faring in such challenging circumstances. As my curiosity grew, so did my interest in the idea of becoming a barista or owning a small restaurant with a cozy and inviting ambiance. The thought of creating a space where people could unwind, savor a delicious cup of coffee, and engage in meaningful conversations became a cherished dream of mine.

Honestly, I must admit that my interest in coffeehouses and cafes was also fueled by the content I encountered on social media platforms. The algorithms played a role in piquing my curiosity and providing me with relevant content. However, I don’t blame them for it; instead, I see it as an opportunity to explore new ideas and expand my horizons.

Despite being a person who often feels socially awkward, I genuinely enjoy connecting with others and fostering a sense of community. It brings me joy to see people come together, share experiences, and support one another. Despite my own reservations, I find fulfillment in creating meaningful connections and nurturing a sense of belonging among individuals.

As someone who has been oriented towards the corporate world, it’s quite surprising how the idea of coffee-related tasks or business has captivated my interest. I can’t pinpoint the exact trigger, but there’s an undeniable allure and enchantment surrounding the concept of owning a coffee shop. The romantic and dreamy atmosphere it offers is something that deeply resonates with me.

The allure of opening a coffee barista or cafe is hard to resist. Maybe it’s the idea of being your own boss, the intoxicating aroma of freshly brewed coffee, or the cheerful sound of the door chime. Whatever the reason, these cafes always seem to be bustling with happiness. It’s a common dream shared by many and one that holds a special appeal.

Owning your own coffee bar or cafe certainly comes with its challenges, but that’s all part of the adventure, isn’t it? For coffee lovers with dreams of becoming baristas or cafe owners, it’s an intriguing path to pursue. Even if there’s a risk of going broke or facing bankruptcy, the experience, and journey are still worth the leap of faith. After all, some of the greatest successes are born from taking chances.

Ah, let’s see if that dream will ever come true in my timeline. But for now, it’s comforting to hold onto that one simple aspiration.
